Cigan is an interesting, Hamlet-like story shot in the real surroundings of an Eastern Slovakian village. Very few actors were used in this film (just 3) as the cast was intentionally made up of “real people.” Check this film out for many reasons, including some truly beautiful camera work and fascinating shots in a very real location.
Cigan won 4 awards at Karlovy Vary film festival: the Special Jury Award, two awards from unofficial juries: The International Federation of Film Societies (FICC) called it the best film and awarded it the Don Quijote Prize, while the Europa Cinemas Label association also gave it a best film award. Ján Mižigár, who played the main role, was also awarded special recognition.
Avion colourist Jan Ali Moravec has some fond memories of working on the snow in this film, and like all of us is proud to have been involved in completing a beautiful, successful film.
